Fishing licences in Maryland
Most anglers 16 and older need a Maryland fishing licence. Which one depends on the water; children under 16 fish free.
- Tidal waters (Chesapeake Bay, its tidal rivers, the coastal bays)
- Buy a Chesapeake Bay & Coastal Sport Fishing Licence — or join the free Maryland tidal Angler Registry and fish tidal waters without buying a licence.
- Non-tidal (fresh) waters
- A Non-Tidal (freshwater) Fishing Licence is required. Add a Trout Stamp to keep trout.
- Free Fishing Days
- Maryland sets a few licence-free days each year when anyone may fish statewide without a licence.
- Licence-Free Fishing Areas
- DNR designates specific non-tidal spots where no licence is ever required. Confirm the current list at the source below.
